A really neat navy leather notebook with 12 commemorative 9" x 10" panels which includes a mint postage stamp with the history related to the stamp and a cancelled stamp marking 100-300 year anniversaries of the events depicted. The panels are enclosed in vinyl pockets. This set was produced in 1998 and show various cancellations from 1998. The panels include:
1. The City of New York is Born (June 18, 1798) - 3 cent stamp issued Nov 20, 1953 celebrating the 300th anniversary of the city's founding.
2. First Alien and Sedition Act Passed (June 18, 1798)- 20 cent stamp issued April 29, 1983 depicting the Concord ship which brought 13 German families seeking religious freedom to the American Colonies in 1683.
3. Warship Maine Explodes in Havana Harbor (February 15, 1898) - 10 cent VFW stamp issued March 11, 1974.
4. The Battle of San Juan Hill (July 1, 1898) - 3 cent stamp issued Oct 27, 1948 depicting the statue of Bucky O'Neill, one of the Rough Riders.
5. Mississippi Territory is Formed (April 7, 1798) - 3 cent stamp issued April 7, 1948.
6. Congress Creates US Marine Corp - 5 cent stamp issued Aug 29, 1966 Marine Corp Reserves.
7. The Department of the Navy is Established (April 30, 1798) - 3 cent stamp issued June 10, 1957 International Naval Review.
8. Spain Cedes to Puerto Rico to the US (August 12, 1898) - 8 cent stamp issued September 12, 1971 depicting Fortress of El Morro.
9. US Declares War on Spain (April 25, 1898) - 4 cent stamp issued Mar 23, 1937 depicting Admirals Sampson, Schley, and Dewey.
10. Treaty Ending Spanish American War is Signed (Dec 10, 1898) - 3 cent stamp issued Nov 25, 1937 depicting Puerto Rico's Governor's Palace.
11. US Victorious in Battle of Manila Bay (May 1, 1898) - 3 cent stamp issued Sept 27, 1944 depicting Corregidor Island.
12. The United States Annexes Hawaii (Aug 12, 1898) - 13 cent stamp issued Jan 20, 1978 for the anniversary of Capt. Cook's arrival in Hawaii.
The notebook is in very good condition with only a slight scuff on the top edge. It is engraved with the name of Whipple Van Ness Jones III - a grandson of the founder of Aspen ski resorts, Whipple Van Ness Jones. Really nice set.
